"Red Hawk"

Children were generally first named at about six or seven years of age. Personal names were not normally used within the family and the terms mother, father, sister, first son etc. were commonly used. Children were sometimes given the name of a favorite deceased relative. As a child grew into adulthood, they frequently received a different name; one that was more fitting to his personal attributes beliefs or totems. Many American Indians believe that the spirit of the dead can return in a different form to guide and watch over them. This painting of Red Hawk has a special connection with the red tail hawk. They communicate, guide and protect him on his journey through life. If he is undecided about a direction to travel, he follows the guidance of his Guardian and is rarely disappointed.
